“David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some …. who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals.” Two hundred eighty-eight were especially skilled singers, 1 Ch. 24:1, 7.
David knew (with his commanders of the army!) the source of Israel’s greatness did not depend on the size of their armies or the skill of their trained fighters but on the presence of the Lord in all their endeavors, including fighting. How best to ensure that was to provide for an atmosphere of praise and worship through music. That “presence” is still our source of confidence.
